Today I want to talk about truth. What it is and how we shall know it when we hear it. I wasn’t raised in a church and I wasn’t raised in any religious tradition. I searched out religion of my own volition. The evidence of my own intellect and senses made it impossible that there wasn’t a prime mover, a creator, a God.
My mother was rebelling against a Southern Baptist upbringing and let me do almost exactly as I pleased, since she felt she had been denied the fun that most kids and especially teenagers had. What the world wants us to think of as fun doesn’t last. It is only for a season and then we are left with the consequences of whatever “fun” choice we have made. More than this, the fun that the world or Satan through the world holds out to us is never as fun or satisfying as we were led to believe that it would be.
In like manner, people in the world are always trying to convince us that something or other is true. Whether it be on the topic of religion, politics or any other subject that pertains to a worldview. Worldview is defined as “The overall perspective by which one observes and interprets the world.” When one person starts talking to you about the “truth” of evolution or an Earth and universe that is millions of years old, it is helpful to understand what their worldview is. For the person whose starting position is that there is no God, that person’s truth claims are being shaped, molded and informed by preconceived notions.
When one man tells you that they wouldn’t want their daughters to be “punished with a baby”, it helps to understand where they are coming from. IF they don’t believe in God and his word, the Bible, it only makes sense that they will make statements that they believe are or that they want to be true. MAN has a lot of funny ideas about what is true. Let us see what the Bible has to say about truth. There are literally scores of scriptures which talk about or mention truth. I am going to focus on just a few because of how they tie together and give us an overview on how to KNOW if something is true or not.
Please give attention to the Word of God. Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
II Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
John 1:1-6 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
John 17:7 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
The Bible is not a collection of separate writings and teachings. I think we all know this but it is important that we are all on the same sheet of music before my next point. The Bible is the collected, complete and perfect Word of God. None of it exists without reason and none of it stands alone. The entire Bible has a plot and purpose; to foretell, foreshadow and chronicle the person of Christ, give us the truth that we may be led unto salvation and then to preach and teach Christ. Sinless, Crucified, Risen and living forever more making intercession on our behalf at the right hand of the father!
How do we know what is true? If we start with the knowledge that JESUS is the truth, everything else should be much easier! Whatever we believe or think on any topic, it helps to filter our beliefs, thoughts and ideas through the one thing we DO know is absolutely true! Jesus! The scriptures I read earlier show us that Jesus is truth and that all scripture is true! There is a concept here that some of us might have missed in the past! Jesus IS the Word of God! NOTHING was made without him and all things were made through him. The word of God is Jesus and Jesus is the Word! No difference! SO when we are looking at what we believe, we can find out if it is real, true and worthy of us as as professing children of God by dragging those thoughts, beliefs and ideas out into the light and seeing if they line up with God’s word by searching the scriptures!
Opinions are one thing and we all have them. We should move away from whether you or I or anyone else is right and be willing to look at what God says. Let God be true, but every man a liar. Jesus is the truth! God’s Word is truth! They are also the same! So, when we think about what we “think, feel and believe”; we do ourselves and our Lord a disservice if we keep these separate from our belief in God or don’t allow our faith to have sway over the same. We can KNOW that what we think, feel and believe about any subject is true when it lines up with the scriptures and what we know about Jesus through them! Finally, in closing I want to finish with 2 Corinthians 10:1-7
Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you: But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled. Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? if any man trust to himself that he is Christ’s, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ’s, even so are we Christ’s.
