The ONE thing that should be axiomatic to all “Christians” is the deity of Christ. If we don’t accept that Jesus is God then there is no way we can ever be forgiven of our sins and receive eternal life. SO, if we don’t have a starting point or foundation if you will that Jesus is God then everything else is secondary.
1 Corinthians 3:11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ
The eternal and divine nature of Jesus is a BASIC and central teaching of Christianity. I will do everything in my power by the Grace of God to use his word and the gifts he has given me to settle this matter beyond a shadow of a doubt. Jesus is ABSOLUTELY God and I will now begin to show it.
The first thing is to analyze the BIBLE to see just what it has to say about Jesus and who and what he was and is.
The Prophet Isaiah said in Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Immanuel has a VERY definite meaning in the Hebrew language that is also spelled out in the Bible. In fact Matthew chapter 1 has this to say in Matthew 1:21-23 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
Let’s look at that for just a moment. Immanuel or Emmanuel means GOD with us. WHY does the Bible say this if the Messiah Jesus Christ was NOT God? More than this the idea of saving the people from their sins ONLY makes sense IF he is God. The Jewish teaching and tradition from the Old Testament and then continued into the New Testament is CLEAR that ONLY God alone can forgive sin. Luke 5:20-21 And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? Luke 7:48-49 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?
John 10:10-11 & 24-33 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep….24 Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly. Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness of me. But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand. I and my Father are one. Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
Right now I want to change direction just a bit and talk abut God the Father. In Exodus 3:13-15 Moses has an exchange with God through the Burning bush. Please hear the word of God “And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you. And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, the Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.
Just so we are all on the same sheet of music God the father said his name was I Am. Jesus ALSO said his name was I am! Jesus never had to use any name to perform any miracle. he did ALL that he did by his OWN authority and in his own name. WE only have power and authority in HIS name as well! Jesus has that authority because he is a co equal and eternal aspect of the Godhead.
There are DOZENS of examples where Jesus said that he was God or implied it and didn’t correct ANYONE who said he was God. In John 8:56-59 Jesus said Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. Then took they up stones to cast at him:
Do you see the importance of what he said? He said I AM. He said not only did I exist before Abraham the father of all the Jewish people but he also said I AM GOD. The I AM was CLEARLY understood by all Jews due to Moses’ exchange with God. This is NOT the only instance in the bible that says that Jesus was God…
John 4:25-26 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
Jesus CLEARLY told this woman that he was the promised and awaited Messiah. What does the Old Testament have to say about the Messiah?…
Remember Isaiah 7:14?.. Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. This was written over 700 years Before Christ
Jeremiah 23:5-6 says Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, The Lord Our Righteousness.
What are we to make of this? the Jewish people had been told REPEATEDLY that God was ONE God and that they had only one lord..
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
WHY does the bible prophesy that Messiah would be Lord if only God the father can be Lord? The Trinity is spoken of repeatedly throughout the Bible but the Father, Son and Holy Ghost or Spirit is all ONE. Three aspects of the same God. The Holy Spirit is not an angel and Jesus most certainly isn’t one either. Jesus WAS and IS Lord.
I recently heard two questions arising from doubts as to who and what Jesus was and is.
Why Did Jesus say he was the “son of man”? Well, this takes a little research to understand. The wiki page for son of man http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Son_of_man says “”Son of man” is the translation of various Hebrew and Greek phrases used in both the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament. It has diverse meanings, ranging from a normal human being to a prophesied eternal, divine ruler.”
Surprisingly, they are absolutely correct. The Bible sometimes uses son of man to speak of mankind generally. However, in NUMEROUS instances it also is a Messianic title. This duality is to prove and show that Jesus though divine and eternal was also TRULY human during his time upon Earth. If he weren’t a real man he couldn’t understand what we experience and what it means to be human. If he were not GOD he couldn’t pay the price for our sins or forgive them.
The Prophet Daniel had a prophecy about the Messiah in Daniel 7:13-14…I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.
This prophecy speaks of Jesus and when Jesus used the phrase “son of man” ALL the Jews knew he was making a reference to or a claim upon the prophecy in the writings of the Prophet Daniel. So you see, he wasn’t saying I am a son of a man, as that would be a lie, since Jesus was conceived in Mary by the Holy Spirit and had been with no man. What he WAS saying is HEY. The Prophet Daniel told you I was coming and here…I AM! This I Am is again referring to Jesus saying repeatedly “ I AM” which we know was GODs own name for himself to the people of Israel…
Why did God the Father say that Jesus was his son while Jesus was being baptized instead of saying something like there I am before you…
This question seems so odd to me. HOW could God the father explain to the Jewish mindset “Hey, John! The “Man” you see before you is actually me”? John would have said something like “How can you be in two place and be two differnt people”? My God is one god!
To lay the foundation for the next point I am going to make about John the Baptist and Jesus I actually have to go back to a time before EITHER of them was born….
In Luke 1:13-17 we can read about Zacharias and Elisabeth. An angel of the Lord appeared to Zacharias and said ” Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb. And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
Then in Luke 1:30-35 we read “And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
I was going to wait but I can’t resist! The angel tells Mary that her son Jesus will be the son of GOD, GOD himself says this later too and people ask why Jesus called himself the son of man? I have already explained that but this just makes it all the more clear. Jesus was LITERALLY the son of God the Father, through the Holy Spirit but this was just his PHYSICAL birth as a human being. Later in Luke Mary goes to visit her cousin Elisabeth.. 1:40-43 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
The Holy Spirit gives knowledge and wisdom and here we see that the Holy Spirit was WITH Elisabeth as she called the Baby in Marys’ belly her Lord!
Luke 3:4-6 As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.
Later the Pharisees send representatives to question John in Luke 3:25-34 And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose. These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing. The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.
John 1:1-14 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Jesus says in John 13:13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.
Isaiah 42:8 I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.
God doesn’t share his glory!
Now let’s hear Jeuss again in John 17:1-5 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
Here we have DOZENS of scriptural proofs that Jesus is GOD, he said it, his disciples said it, his enemies said it…
C.S. Lewis said “I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronising nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to. … Now it seems to me obvious that He was neither a lunatic nor a fiend: and consequently, however strange or terrifying or unlikely it may seem, I have to accept the view that He was and is God.”
You can not be saved and go to heaven unless you believe that Jesus is God and accept him as Lord and savior and ask him to forgive your sins..
Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
John 5:22-23For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
At this point there is nothing more that I can say.
If ALL of this writing and teaching from the Bible doesn’t convince someone that Jesus IS God there is little else that I, a humble servant of the Lord can do…
DON’T let Satan keep you from God. The Devil doesn’t want ANYONE to get saved so it is his earnest desire that all people refuse Christ and deny him as that means no matter what else you do you will still go to hell.
