Is Heaven Is For Real Scripturally For Real?

This page started out when a friend posted how much they liked this movie on Facebook my responses will be marked by three asterisks at the beginning and end of my responses, I will also italicize and bold my responses to make it easier to see which words are mine..

***I personally will not read or watch The bible Miniseries, Son of God movie or Heaven is for real. They all, to some degree or another teach a different Gospel and Christ. WHY are people getting rich and going on Oprah with “special revelation” when the Bible already tells us about heaven and hell?

I seem to recall the Bible saying that there was NO point in “warning” people because they will NOT believe even if one be “sent from the dead”… Why are we all SO eager to accept books and movies that are NOT scriptural? If it has mass market success you can almost GUARANTEE it is not doctrinally or scripturally accurate..

Luke 16 19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:

20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,

21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.

27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house:

28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.

29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.

30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.

31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

If people will not believe in Heaven and Hell when presented with the BIBLE they will not believe from these books and movies… This is preaching to the choir except the “choir” more readily accepts these fictions than they do the Bible..***

Response by:Drucilla…

You sound like the pastor in the movie Heaven is for Real. He too struggled with believing a child could communicate and “see” Jesus. He was blinded by legalism and didn’t understand the vastness of grace. The board of the church wanted only the teaching of scripture and ignored the power of the eyes and heart of a child touched by God. It is interesting that the movie Jesus was taken by Bill Bright with Campus Crusade for Christ to India and thousands of people got saved through that movie. Many people know the Bible and about God, but few really know Him. He reveals Himself in His way by the Holy Spirit. “Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God” and Jesus is the Word! He reveals Himself in many ways and limits not Himself. Many have been touched by the love of God and embraced Jesus as Lord through song, books, people’s testimonies, and the BIble, I Corinthians 2:10 and Romans 2:14

***Drucilla… I understand where you’re coming from but PLEASE realize I am not being Legalistic I am following GODS’ word…

You said something ENTIRELY CORRECT though.. Jesus IS the word and the word is him… That is why I stick to a Sola Scriptura position… We are taught, REPEATEDLY to test everything according to the scripture..

Hebrews 13:9 Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For [it is] a good thing that the heart be established with grace;

2 Timothy 3:16 – All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Titus 2:1 – But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:

1 John 4:1 – Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

2 Timothy 2:15 – Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Romans 16:17 – Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
Follow up with Acts 17:11 11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

We err and are on seriously UNSTABLE ground when we treat the Holy Bible like a “Living Document”. It isn’t. It is a closed cannon that contains ALL we need. In fact, when we unpack 2 Timothy 3:16 IN CONTEXT we see something important..

2 Timothy 3 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,

7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.

9 But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as their’s also was.

10 But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience,

11 Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.

12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;

15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

This is NOT about Legalism as NO person is justified under the law… This is about SOUND doctrine and true religion. Concepts the Bible speaks to REPEATEDLY..

To summarize, if it aligns with scripture it is truth… If it does NOT it isn’t..

____Just about EVERY false religion and cult is started by people adding to or changing the words of scripture.____

For more on what IS truth..

Also, I am not saying that a movie can not be useful in witnessing and apologetics… I recommend, The Case for Christ, The Case for a Creator, God’s Not Dead, Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, Evolution VS God and many more…

What I AM saying, is that any movie or tool that does NOT align with Scripture I will NOT use or recommend…

JESUS himself taught of the importance of scripture… Mark 7:6 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men

In Matthew 4 when Jesus is being tempted by Satan (and in fact in EVERY instance where challenged) Jesus NEVER points to any teaching from any Priest, Rabbi or local authority… Instead he points to the SCRIPTURE as the foundation and guide, the standard by which all things are to be checked and held up to for verification.

Lastly, I will provide a link to an article that outlines the MANY, MANY issues with this book and movie..…/is-colton-burpos…

I also leave you with Pauls’ admonition in Galatians 1:1 Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead;)

2 And all the brethren which are with me, unto the churches of Galatia:

3 Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ,

4 Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:

5 To whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:

7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.

8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

9 As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

11 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.

12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.***

Jason (original posters husband) wrote:  Hey, The Avengers is a great movie. I greatly recommend it! Saw Guardians of the Galaxy. Must see as well! Is it preaching the gospel? No. Was the movie Heaven is for Real teaching the gospel? No. It was a wonderfully positioned movie to open your mind a little. I know as well as most anyone else knows there are more people who go to church, but only do so to keep appearances. The sad thing here is that I saw the movie and the same message is being conveyed here. So many Christians who believe that Jesus will not present himself to anybody. I don’t know why you are griefing my wife just because she liked a movie with such a positive message. You honestly need to find a better way of spending your time. To be blunt, I will put it this way…if you respond again with anything else but an apology for completely destroying my wifes post, I’ll just delete it. The whole post. With just a few words, her point was made. You however have posted and pasted and I have yet to understand the point you are trying to make. If you didn’t agree it was a good movie and wanted to voice your opinion, POST IT TO YOUR OWN WALL! Now…feel free to post on my wall why the bible says, “Don’t watch the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy.” Make sure to click and paste every bit you find. I want it to be verbatim if possible.

***Jason… I am a Christian and a Preacher/teacher of the Bible…ALL of us can be wrong at times…

Where I am wrong, I expect the Holy Spirit to correct me or to send someone to point out my error.  The Bible supports this entirely… We all, on ALL issues, can be wrong and should endeavor to learn and grow… Especially in the nurture and knowledge of the Lord…

If you or anyone else, fails to understand the point I am trying to make, I believe it is because you do not WISH to understand…

In fact, in a way, you actually made my point… I too loved Guardians of the Galaxy… No it is NOT supposed to preach the gospel as it is NOT a Christian movie… Heaven is for Real, however is marketed to and mostly being watched and financially supported BY people who would call themselves Christian..

If what it teaches or presents is NOT in line with Gods’ word I would think that “Christians” might want to know this… Everything I posted, ESPECIALLY the link to No Ordinary faith blog that details the MANY un or extra scriptural issues with the movie..

You presented two glaring and OBVIOUS fallacious arguments of the straw man variety…

Definition: A straw man is a common type of argument and is an informal fallacy based on the misrepresentation of an opponent’s argument.  To be successful, a straw man argument requires that the audience be ignorant or uninformed of the original argument.

The so-called typical “attacking a straw man” argument creates the illusion of having completely refuted or defeated an opponent’s proposition by covertly replacing it with a different proposition (i.e., “stand up a straw man”) and then to refute or defeat that false argument (“knock down a straw man”) instead of the original proposition

By pretending I am saying things I clearly am not you sidestep the ACTUAL arguments being made which you admit you don’t understand…

The false positions you imply I have taken are…

1.  That all movies should present the Gospel.  I won’t even unpack this as it is CLEAR to any one reading our posts that I never said or even implied any such thing.

2.  Jesus will never reveal himself to any one… I know Jesus personally.  He is my Lord, Savior, Creator and friend.  He is God.  He reveals himself to us through the scriptures and the Holy Spirit… HOWEVER, any special revelation or experience any believer has, must be evaluated by the TRUTH of the Bible.

I have nothing to apologize for so I will just not post anything else to Amanda’s thread… if she wishes to unfriend me for standing for the TRUTH of Gods word as known through his word?…. So be it.

I have done nothing but love and pray for you and your family.  I took time to help your son learn guitar, showed him how to change strings, answered questions and helped Amanda etc…

Being right is not important to me….. Being right with God is.

God bless.
